I recently mentioned how I was going to make a concerted effort to see more of my current hometown and its surrounding areas. There are a lot of different things to do in the greater Charleston area, so I needed to get started ASAP.
My first stop was Guerin’s Pharmacy. This was my first choice because it is just minutes from my apartment.
Guerin’s Pharmacy is the oldest pharmacy in South Carolina. It was built in 1871 and still fills prescriptions to customers. The real draw? It “features an old-fashioned soda fountain where you can enjoy malted milkshakes and ice cream” (source).
One of the cool things about “downtown” Summerville is it looks like a historic downtown and Guerin’s is the cornerstore.
It was a neat, little place. It was very cramped and smelled kinda mildewy, which I guess is expected for 130+ year-old building. There were some antiques in there and even some older products – candy cigarettes!!!
I ended up getting a chocolate milkshake, which wasn’t anything that special, but still tasted good.
Sorry that my first stop on my tour wasn’t all that thrilling, but it was something I felt I had to see.
